Will Rogers once said “Heroes are made every little while, but only one in a million conduct themselves afterwards so that it makes us proud that we honored them at the time”. I guess that was true in Will’s time, but isn’t it even more true today. America seems to have an insatiable desire to recognize heroes. Look at all the “heroes” that are created today by the press. Many of them fall into the same trap Will talked about and often make us sorry we ever honored them. The saddest part is most all of us partake in the misery of a fallen hero; not just the hero. We wonder how could we have misjudged someone that much, and in fact often feel we are a weak because we did misjudge someone.
The thing that many people need to recognize and remember is that we all, at some point in time, are or have been someone’s hero. Heros come in all sorts of sizes and denominations and genders. You do not have to be a major league hitter batting .350 or a pitcher winning 20+ games with an ERA less than 2.o. Anyone can be a hero to somebody else. Be careful how you conduct yourself. Being someone’s hero is an honor and a big responsibility, and should not be taken lightly. However, the hero should never reach the point of starting to believe it himself or herself. That is usually the beginning of the end.
So, pay attention, you never know who might be admiring you.
